You've found the rug of your dreams. The next step: figuring out the right size based on how you'll be placing it in the space. Here, we break down everything you need to know room by room to get that perfect fit.
- In general, the front half of all sofas and chairs should fit comfortably on the rug.
- For larger spaces, aim for a generously sized rug so all furniture sits completely within its borders.
- Allow for at least 6” of rug on either side of your chair(s) and sofa(s).
- The rug should be centered under the table but still large enough so chairs fit comfortably on it even when they’re pulled out.
- Leave at least 18-24” between chair backs and the rug’s edge.
- Opt for the rug size that accommodates the largest length or diameter of the table.
- To fill out the full room, choose a rug size that fits comfortably under all of your bedroom furniture, including side tables, and leave at least 18-24” of floor exposed around the edges.
- A mid-size rug should go underneath the bed and extend to meet the edges of any bedside tables.
- For a budget-friendly option, use one rug to fill in the open area next to an off-centered bed or two equally-sized smaller rugs on either side of a centered bed.
Layering rugs of various sizes and materials adds richness and flexibility to a room.
